2017 Carignane - Angeli Vineyard

It's extremely likely that more carignane grapes are grown world-wide than any other single varietal. However, very little is labeled under it's varietal name, rather blended for volume into countless "jug wine" programs across California's Central Valley and Southern Rhône in France. Vines grown in ideal locations for soil and climate conditions, lower yield/older vines and creative winemaking have served extraordinary carignane varietal wines. Careful barrel selection will also enhance the varietals natural spiciness and add depth and complexity.

Tasting Notes

A dazzling bright ruby hue introduces astounding aromas of cranberry, cardamom, hibiscus tea, rose petal and subtle cocoa. Flavors are a complexly wrapped balance of the fruit and spice notes from your olfactory experience. Textures weave together with the flavors long after the wine has been swallowed leaving a balanced appeal and notable complexity.

Production Notes

Hand-picked and sorted from a specific vineyard block. Small-lot open top fermentation with strategic aerated pumpovers. Lightly pressed when dry.

Winemaker Notes

The 107 year old vineyard which produce these grapes has producing spectacular varietal character for many amazing winemakers for a century, plus. To my knowledge, thumbprint cellars is the only Single Vineyard production of these grapes. Unfortunately, after an incredible streak of sensational vintages these vines have been removed. It is a sad reality, however the multiple years of bottled wines will continue to live on. This 2017 vintage - marred with a long wet winter, an extremely hot growing season and devastating fires is actually showing spectacular quality for the wines thumbprint crafted; including this offering - the last from the 107 year old Angeli Vineyard.
