2014 Merlot - Frei Vineyard
My early wine influences were 'full-body' varietals. Wines from the 'Right Bank' are predominately merlot-based and are used to craft some of the most intriguing and expensive wines in the world! Those wines are among the inspirations for this delicious merlot offering. A dark ruby hue, spiced dark fruit aromas and complex flavors and textures surrender an opulence only this varietal can deliver. Versatile with all cuisine.
150 cases crafted. Unfiltered/Unfined. Vegan
The depth of this merlot is punctuated by complex aromatics and flavors; bittersweet chocolate covered blueberry, subtle sage, black cherry, Burbank plum and integrated oak weave throughout a long finish with bright acidity and velvety tannins.
Primary fermentation was paced well with a moderate 80 degree temperature using a Sonoma County yeast isolate, RP 15. Cultured Malo-lactic bacterial performed a swift, efficient and quick 14 day secondary fermentation.
Perhaps my favorite wine at this moment, I poured intentional effort to find the specific balance this merlot offers. Finding that with 4% cabernet franc blended subtle spice through the middle with a long, mouth-watering finish.
30 months of barrel age; 20% new French oak barrels, once and twice filled French and American oak from a mix of coopers.
