Dear thumbprint family,

5th Apr 2020 @ 17:53 by

For those who have been directly affected by COVID-19, please know our hearts and thoughts are with you. We are all holding out hope for the health and safety of everyone.

As some of you may know, California's Governor has asked all wineries to close temporarily as a means to support efforts to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and thus the thumbprint Tasting Lounge is currently closed to the public.

As we face these uncertain times we are leaning into our core values as a company. Our main value has always been family first. We wanted to take a moment to share with you, our extended thumbprint family, how we are working to continue to serve our valued customers through these changing times.

Keeping our Team healthy and safe: We are a small, family owned company that values each member of our team. Keeping our staff safe and healthy is paramount to us. We are adjusting roles and schedules to allow our staff to maintain income while working remotely wherever possible. Throughout the initial stages of the COVID-19 outbreak, we initiated strict cleaning and sanitizing protocols to keep our work spaces safe. We even mixed up our own batch of hand sanitizer when the stores ran out!

Continuing to get thumbprint to you: Because our team is working remotely, we will not answer the phone when you call. However, we will be checking messages and getting back to you. The best way to stay in touch is through email:

Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you'd like us to ship you some wine. Personally, we're noticing that a beautiful glass of thumbprint is really helpful to lift our spirits lately. As long as fed-ex is shipping, we will endeavor to keep getting wine shipped to you!

thumbprint was built from relationships and we hope to keep that alive through these difficult times. As we face these uncertain times we would like to thank you, our thumbprint family, for your continued support during the ever changing COVID-19 environment.

Stay safe, stay healthy and keep in touch.

Scott, Erica and the thumbprint Team

“Place your left hand on your right shoulder.

Put your right hand on your left shoulder. Now squeeze.

Big hugs to you from your thumbprint family!”

Mac-A-Palooza 2020 Pairings + Family Recipes

26th Jan 2020 @ 13:43 by

We had a GOUDA time in the Lounge with friends. With so many of you raving about the delicious mac'n'cheeses, we wanted to share our family recipes.

You always hear of classic wine and cheese combo but sometimes you want a quick mid-week dinner to pair with your wine. For us, mac'n'cheese is a no brainer. Talk about comfort for the soul! Whether you like to make your mac healthy or indulge in all the creamy richness that cheese can offer, many recipes can be made in under 30 minutes (which by the way is a great amount of time to pop a cork and "open up" your wine - also known as "decanting").

Quality ingredients are what elevates your mac'n'cheese meal from elementary to Michelin star. Here in the heart of wine country we, are very fortunate to have a plethora of artisan cheesemakers available at our fingertips. Finding the best local ingredients around you is the best way to go when searching for quality flavors! Big John's is a local market in Healdsburg we shopped at to find all specialty cheeses for a unique pairing.

4 Mac Recipes to Pair

Noodles - At the party, we choose organic + gluten-free noodles to accommodate more allergies and dietary needs. They were classic elbow noodles from the brand "Pamela's". The texture and cook time is identical to any normal wheat flour-based noodles. Place a pot of water on high heat, once it's boiling add some salt to the water. When you drop in the noodles make sure to stir and break up any clumps, overall cook time is about 10-13 minutes. After you have carefully tested a noodle if the batch is done, strain and rinse your macaroni with cold water.

Cheese roux - To start the gooey cheesy goodness, melt the butter in a pot over medium heat. Once the butter is browned, turn the heat to low and mix in some flour to create the base. Slowly WHISK in your wet ingredients - wine or truffle oil, and then the whole milk combining them together so there are no clumps. After that, you are ready to add your cheeses. Shread all your cheese to make it melt quick and evenly. Divide all your shreadded cheese of choice into three or four piles and add a handful of cheese to the pot at a time. Make sure it fully melts before adding more cheese. You may need to add more milk if it gets to thick. Now that the cheeses are melted together, taste your roux and add some spices for extra pizazz. With the pot of melted cheese on low heat, gently mix in the rinsed elbow noodles to finish up your mac'n'cheese creation. Serve and enjoy with wine!

Wine + Ice Ceam Pairings

2nd Oct 2019 @ 12:33 by

Thank you for celebrating the end of Summer at our Ice Cream Social!

If you weren't able to make it to The Lounge for the party, we wanted to share our menu of pairings so that you can try them anytime at home. All food and wine pairings are subjective and will differ among people's preferences. Experiment with your own combinations and let us know how it went!

We started with the 2015 Brut sparkling white wine paired up with a light and refreshing passion fruit sorbet. The passion fruit brought out a little touch of sweetness to the brioche flavors of the wine, it reminded us of the warm fresh and floral summer breeze. Our next pairing was chosen by surprise, the 2014 Climax blend pairs great with NOBLE Folk's Blood Orange and Raspberry (their spin on the classic orange creamsicle). With how extremely lush the body of this blend is, the bright orange and raspberry pop of flavor brought out the finish for a lingering balance of tannins. The 2014 Malbec with coffee ice cream is what started it all, after a random ice cream sample and sip of wine, its all downhill from there. At the Lounge this pairing will always be a favorite, it has a classic spice profile with a bold but velvety smooth finish. Our 2013 Viognier port and 2014 Zinfandel Port were easy to pair but so hard to finalize what we liked best... so we suggest to try them BOTH with the Lemon Custard topped with blackberry compote AND the Swiss Chocolate ice cream. Have fun trying them all!

Viognier Port + Lemon Custard = Strong front palate with a crazy flavorful lingering finish
Viognier Port + Swiss Chocolate = Salted Chocolate Caramel
Zin Port + Lemon Custard = Pops of blueberry and bright lemon
Zin Port + Swiss Chocolate = Classic coco and rich plum characteristics

Fall 2019 Newsletter - Sonoma County Harvest

20th Aug 2019 @ 15:47 by

We're getting ready for the 2019 Harvest here in Sonoma County. This doesn't mean we're close yet. It always seems like when we plan waaaayyy ahead, but the grapes just take their time ripening and we end up in a holding pattern, waiting for the day it all starts. Being 2-3 weeks behind means longer hang-time for the grapes, which means more evenly ripened clusters. This, of course, means more complex varietal characters in the grapes we'll be fermenting, aging and bottling a few years down the line. We're predicting slightly lower yields than compared to 2017 and '18 and typically lower yields translate to higher quality wines. I'll keep you posted as we get a little closer.

We have some amazing wines to offer you from the stellar 2015 vintage! The highly anticipated Single Vineyard Series Petit Verdot makes it's debut while replacing our previous Dry Creek vintage. This stunning Alexander Valley, Single Vineyard Petit Verdot has a vibrant purple hue, baking spice and dark fruit aromas, with mouthwatering textures and balanced complexity that pulls it all together nicely. This wine should be amazing with your Thanksgiving meal… if you can wait that long. This limited production will sell out. Make sure to order more now before it's gone! You will thank us later, as this varietal became a favorite to many.

The 2015 Climax is my super blend: 56% Zinfandel, 26% Syrah, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec and 1% Viognier compose uncompromising complexity. I have so much fun arranging the blends to create a sum greater than their parts. A stunning dark hue, briary blackberry aromas and flavors and full-bodied mouthfeel explode with layers of fruit, spice and textures. Enjoy now or cellar through 2025.

Vineyard Spotlight: Ramazzotti Vineyard - Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County

Zinfandel and Dry Creek Valley are an insurmountable pairing! Finding the best spot to grow Zin here isn't difficult. The 2 1/2 mile wide by 16 mile long valley is narrow in comparison to many appellations but still offers unique micro-climates and varied soil structures. The Ramazzotti Vineyard is a hillside vineyard planted into volcanic loam and a rocky sub-structure in the northeastern part of Dry Creek Valley. Vines aged between 40-100 years old, are well-tended year round to produce a dynamic, quintessential zinfandel that boasts a cabernet-like complexity and unmistakable varietal character. 2-3% each of Carignane and Petite Sirah are planted within the block grown for thumbprint to create a field blend. If you ask any credible winemaker what their favorite wine is to make and drink many will divulge it is Zinfandel. They will also confess it is the most difficult wine to make, without a doubt. Having this amazing vineyard to source our Zinfandel grapes from helps curb the difficulty a bit. Working with growers like Joe Ramazzotti makes it well worth the wait.

Spring 2019 Newsletter

What's in the glass at the end of the rainbow?

Cabernet Sauvignon, of course!

Cab continues to reign as King in the wine world, and I have been proudly crafting this varietal for over 20 years. It's been exciting to taste the development of these wines while they have progressed from grapes to thoughtfully aged wines. The vineyards I work with are producing some of the highest quality grapes world-wide. Specifically, the 2014 and 2015 Sonoma County vintages are among the best vintages I've worked with. I’m pleased to send a few examples to you in this shipment.

You will have the privilege to compare the similarities and the differences between the two Cabernet Sauvignons. The 2014 Knights Valley Cabernet from Lisa's Vineyard is the easternmost appellation we source from, sitting between Sonoma and Napa County, where ‘mountain fruit’ vines prevail. The 2015 Alexander Valley Cabernet from Sciaini Vineyard is our northernmost vineyard source. Both of these wines offer complexity gained from exquisite sustainable farming practices. Each vineyard was picked at its peak of ripeness and directly delivered to our winery to ensure the quality of all the grapes. A healthy fermentation cycle converted the sugars to alcohol and began the aging process in perfect balance. Barrel selection is an important aspect of winemaking I love to experiment with. I source all of ours from low-yield cooperages that are skilled in producing characteristics which benefit these wines; taking the fruit components and integrating them with subtle spice notes to build the aroma, texture, flavor, and complexity of the wine.

The other wines I selected for this shipment are tasting beautifully right now. The Viognier and Rosé will satiate your thirst with complex but refreshing delight. Our 2014 Sciaini Cab has been stunning since originally released in April of 2017 and continues to age elegantly. Our Friends with Benefits club also gets the very last of our 2013 Malbec and 2013 Syrah. Talk about a treat! If you're looking for something delicious tonight these are a great choice. Feel free to venture off your typical tasting patterns and explore some of the other delightful wines I make for you! Overall, wine is about a moment in time. Whether it is a glass at dinner or a special bottle you’ve been saving, it’s about your relaxation, rejuvenation, and enjoyment. All of my thumbprint wines have been carefully developed to make any moment in time perfect. I find joy in making wines I like to drink, but my number one priority is to take care of my wine family. As always, I look forward to hearing any questions, comments, or suggestions you may have and I will respond with elation.

Lisa's Vineyard Spotlight

lisa's vineyard top block Owners & Growers: Lisa Carr and Harvey Hoefer
Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon
Clones: 7, 337, and 887
Soil: Volcanic loam

Lisa and Harvey were introduced to me by another grape grower in early 2007. My initial visit to their vineyard was so inspiring I could hardly restrain my enthusiasm. Their certified organic vineyard has a certain energy I feel whenever I visit. I can breathe easier and think clearer as I am surrounded by the delicate nuances of the trees, wildflowers, soil and creeks. I immediately told Erica about this amazing place and we agreed to purchase their organic cabernet sauvignon grapes for our 2007 harvest. Since then, I have been crafting our exquisite Lisa’s Vineyard cabernet from grapes grown with meticulous precision.

In addition to the honor of making wine from their amazing grapes, Lisa and Harvey have become dear friends. Many meals and bottles of wine have been shared on their lovely property. My love of the water is complemented by Harvey’s mastery of sailing and we have taken club members sailing on the Bay, picinic’d on Angel Island and of course drank Lisa’s Vineyard cabernet, on their beautiful sailboat. We have shuttled groups to their property in Knights Valley for intimate tastings and impromptu pool parties. We’ve harvested olives from their century old trees. The list goes on!

Lisa and Harvey endured The Tubbs fire in 2017 which roared over their property and left patches of devastation still visible on their land. After being evacuated, ‘sleeping’ in their Westfalia at the thumbprint winery overnight, they returned the next day to find their 10,000 gallon water tank had emptied due to melted pipes. They used pool water to douse spot fires all over their property until coheresing a Cal Fire squad parked nearby to join the fight, ultimately saving their structures and vineyards. This story of perseverance only begins to describe the incredible character of our friends, Lisa and Harvey. The wines I craft from their grapes are complex, dynamic and full of character. I am 100% certain this is due to the care and love that is poured into this amazing place from these two wonderful people. We hope you can taste the magic of these grapes that I’ve harnessed into every bottle.

Our Spring Gift to YOU!

Midnight in Pearis, a savory and delightful treat from Jamnation Jams

Scott and Erica found this unique and savory jam in a local grocery store. Once they tried it with the 2014 Lisa's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, they knew they had to share it with our Wine Club members! Erica reached out to the owner and creator, Gillian, who searched for enough organic, local pears to make the hand-crafted batches sufficient to treat all our members to a sample.

We hope you'll love this jam as much as we do. Bosch Pear, vanilla, and nutmeg make a perfect pairing delight. Try it on a simple cracker with blue cheese and our Cabernet Sauvignons. Amazing!
